3 ways to fall asleep fast

When I was younger, I would pass out as soon as my head hit my pillow. Often remaining fast asleep till morning.

On so many occasions, I’d fall asleep in the living room and wake up on my bed without any  knowledge of how I got there.

In the morning, I’d be told that I actually walked to the bedroom myself -most times after being vigorously woken up by the maid or my mum.

But those were the good old days.

These days, I have to pray, pour libations and everything in between before I am granted a lick of sleep. And if for whatever reason my sleep is interrupted at any point in the course of the night I would have to start my sacred ritual all over again.

For me, an uninterrupted night’s rest is a rare find these days.

But in true  millennial fashion, I have spent countless hours rummaging the internet in search of a solution. I have also tried out so many sleep hacks and tricks, some more efficient than others.

In this post, I’ll be the sharing the 3 most effective ways to help you fall asleep fast.

Rapid blinking:

Blinking rapidly for about a minute or two is one of my surefire ways to fall asleep fast.

I’m not entirely sure about the science behind it but according to some answers on quora “when you blink your eyes rapidly the accompanying muscles get tired. So with the muscles tired you fall asleep faster.

This is my personal favorite and most trusted way to fall asleep at any time of the day.

Disclaimer: This works for me almost every time I try it. I find that on days when I pick up my phone AFTER blinking or I start talking or moving about  for whatever reason it doesn’t work. I usually have to start all over again.

Controlled breathing:

This is another very useful hack for when you have difficulty sleeping. Breathing exercises help calm the body and mind, helping you fall asleep faster.

According to this healthline article, there are quite a number of different breathing exercises to try out. But no matter which one you opt for, they all function the same. To help you calm down and make it easier for you to fall asleep.

Disclaimer: This one takes a bit more trial and practice to get used to. It works better when you start to learn how to control your mind and reel in your raging thoughts.

 Switching off all electronic devices:

You’d think this would go without saying but we live in an age where there’s always an electronic distraction of some sort. Sometimes we aren’t aware of how distracting these devices are. TV and social media and co will make it harder for you to fall asleep. If you find yourself trying to sleep, put away all electronic devices. You’ll increase your chances of falling asleep fast.

Bonus point:

I find that chamomile tea helps me fall asleep too. I randomly picked up one at a supermarket one time.  After a detailed google search, I decided to try it out and I’m pleased to tell you that it works.

After my personal encounter with insomnia I began to understand how frustrating and damaging it can be to one’s physical and mental health. If you are reading this(& have trouble sleeping), I hope that the above techniques help you achieve some much deserved sleep.
