February: Plans, Prospect and Wishes

by Ifunanya

My people say mgbe onye ji teta bu ututu ya.* Which is why even though today is  already the 2nd day in the month of Feb. I would like to welcome you to the new month.

I have been working on my writing and have been a bit busier than I would have thought. Still, it is not a real excuse, a lot of people have busier schedules yet they find the time. But all that is by the way.

January was quite rough for me. Life threw several curve balls, learnt some new life lessons. Some I was able to see coming, some hit me when I wasn’t looking. But that’s okay. #WeMove Still learning, still growing.

Enough about the past.

My expectations for this month of February are quite simple;

  • Blog more
  • Write more
  • Travel more

I am trying to keep my days as simple as possible. It seldom works but I keep trying.

There are two things that I will also be dabbling into in this month;

  • Veganism
  • Minimalism.

Veganism, sigh.

Did I mention mother just bought a carton of croaker fish some days ago? I didn’t? Did I also mention that grilled croaker fish is one of my favorite things to eat? I don’t think I did either.

Sigh. 😔

But I will try, because long before the fish was bought, I had already decided, this month will be a meat free month.

Why?

Well there are two simple reasons that have influenced my decisions. The first one being the health implications of eating meat. I think I’m going to do a separate blog post about that. But for now, incase you don’t know let me say that it is better to lay off meat.  Word on the street(and by street I mean WHO) is that processed meat and bacon is carcinogenic.

Then the second reason is simply it’s impact on the planet. I have always been a tree hugger. I think my siblings can tell you how excruciating life was when we were growing up. There was never a day they didn’t have to suffer through a lecture on greenhouse gas, the depleting ozone layer and so on. But even in all my “tree-huggitude” I was unaware of the effect of animal agriculture and livestock farming till recently.

You can read more about it here.

So I have decided to do add my little token by swearing off meat and all things animal produce this month of February. Hopefully as time goes by, it will become a permanent affair.

Baby steps….

Say a prayer for me. That the Almighty helps me to unlook every croaker fish, hamburger and asun that this month hold. Amen.

Then there’s minimalism.

This one is not as serious. You could call it a pet project of some sorts. It all started at the end of the year 2017. I was doing a yearly round off like most people do. Thinking about how my year had gone. Trying to consolidate my finances, going over my bucket list, that kinda stuff. I learnt I had bought quite a number of things  I really hadn’t needed.

This was horrible and unacceptable. I mean who has room for reckless spending in this economy right?

Minimalism is one of the ways I have decided to try and correct some of my errors from last year.

I have been told it’s not exactly a “how to be cheap guide” and I understand that. I was never planning to go all Steve Jobs dress code or something like that.

The idea is to have the idea of being minimalistic front and center in my mind everyday. To help me curb the habit of excessiveness and over indulgence.

Again, keep your fingers crossed for me.

Welcome to the month of February. May all  our endeavors bear fruits and may we find time to bask in the beauty that surrounds us… xxx

I have no goals for this month, but I did get my first yearly planner this month, so I am preparing towards March.

I really wanna stick with being a vegetarian this month but I couldn’t. I hope I can start again this new week and I hope to stick by it. I am so sure minimalism will not work for me. I can’t seem to take my eyes off pretty things no matter the amount.

So happy to have stumbled on your blog! It’s so refreshing to see other (younger) Nigerians who are embracing minimalism and veganism- The two things that are so rare in the typical Nigerian society! I hope February brought you all you hoped for!
